Abstract
When a group acts on a topological space, it is often useful to be able to find the closed orbits for the action. If the group is algebraic and the space is an affine variety, then the Hilbert-Mumford Theorem is very helpful tool for doing this, but it only works in certain settings. In this talk I’ll present a new version of the theorem which works more widely and I’ll illustrate it with some examples from linear algebra. The ideas behind the new result form part of a wider programme of developing “rationality” tools in Geometric Invariant Theory, and I will also explore this if I have time.
