Abstract
The Standard Model of particle physics has been confirmed to incredible precision in numerous tests, most recently with the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC . However, it has many shortcomings, including the hierarchy problem, and failures to explain baryon asymmetry, dark matter, dark energy, and gravity. There must be physics beyond the Standard Model. I will review searches for new physics with the CMS detector, using the LHC Run 1 data, with a focus on exotic physics including dark matter and long lived particles.
