Abstract
In this paper I will discuss the collecting habits of William Courten, alias Charleton, whose collection was absorbed by Hans Sloane, and thus became part of the foundation collection of the British Museum/British Library/Natural History. Courten’s collection was important for several fellows of the Royal Society, including John Ray, Francis Willughby and Edward Lhuyd, who all acknowledged his generosity. I will be discussing how Courten collected naturalia by examining his ledger from the late 1680s.
