Abstract
The talk will describe ongoing taxonomic research into the UK springtails (Collembola) using COI barcodes. The problems encountered are not unique to the group but indicative of similar issues in many invertebrate classes. Within the Collembola, the weight of evidence in the “lumpers vs splitters” debate is that in most cases the splitters were not splitting things nearly far enough! A UK -wide sampling campaign to define two common genera (Entomobrya and Lepidocyrtus) has confirmed cryptic species in both genera, and that the entire taxonomy of Lepidocyrtus needs redefining using molecular tools. Common UK Collembolan clades have turned up in the sub-Antarctic and all major continents, suggesting widespread synanthropic dispersal of these overlooked soil animals. In future high-throughput sampling will be required to quantify the distribution of clades, and distributional databases will need to be reconfigured to recognise genetic data.
