Abstract
Shear failures in concrete are sudden and often catastrophic. When we identify a structure as being weak in shear, we can either knock it down and start again, we can attempt to restrict the applied loads; or we can strengthen the existing structure. This research looks at how much additional shear strength we can add to a slab-on-beam structure by wrapping the down-stand portion of the beam with externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabric. In the first phase of this research, some oddly shaped push-off tests were carried out in order to investigate shear transfer behaviour across a diagonal crack strengthened with CFRP . These results and some possible implications will be discussed.
