Abstract

While app development has emerged in everywhere from smartphones to wearable gadgets, one of the most potential up-coming platforms is vehicles, for empowering “software-defined vehicles” that incorporate highly customizable computational intelligence and user-tailoring configurability, transforming our transportation experiences. However, the automotive industry has been slow to embrace this trend, which imposed numerous hurdles. In this talk, I examine the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in vehicular app development. I also introduce the related research projects in my group, including an open-source platform for vehicular apps, and a real-time tracking app for vehicle movements.

Bio: Sid Chi-Kin Chau is an assistant professor of the Department of EECS at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, UAE , which is the world’s first graduate-level university dedicated to providing real-world solutions to issues of sustainability, and was created in collaboration with MIT . Previously, he was a visiting scholar at MIT , a scientist at A*STAR in Singapore, a Croucher Foundation research fellow at University College London, and a post-doctoral research associate at University of Cambridge. He received the Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and B.Eng. from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
