Structural and functional characterisation of oxide nanomaterials

Abstract
I will give an overview of recent activities of the Materials & Condensed Matter Physics group in Glasgow, with a focus on the characterisation of technologically-relevant complex oxides. My first exemplar is the synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles as a potential contrast agent in medical MRI scanners; these particles are of interest because their unusual ‘octapod’ shape imbues them with unexpectedly pronounced ferromagnetism, even though bulk MnO is know to be a bulk antiferromagnet. My second exemplar will be to describe our efforts in developing oxide materials for data storage applications. I will cover aspects of thin-film growth via pulsed laser deposition; electrical characterisation of nanopatterned devices; and on-going developments in the characterisation of devices using nanoanalytical and Lorentz electron microscopies.
