UNUSUAL DAY

Extended field theory uses generalised geometry and an enlarged coordinate space to give a manifestly U-duality invariant version of 11-dimensional supergravity. I will show how for the SL(5) U-duality group relevant to four dimensions, the extended field theory contains not just a truncation of type IIA but also one of type IIB theory on an equal footing. This truncation is obtained by using an unconventional three-dimensional section of the extended coordinate space and provides a reason for existence of the extra coordinates. I will also discuss how the M, IIA and IIB * theories arise when a Lorentzian version of extended field theory is used.
