Abstract
Blindness caused by photoreceptor death is one of the leading causes of untreatable sight loss in the developed world. Photoreceptor replacement by transplantation is a promising novel therapeutic strategy and recent research has yielded evidence for restoration of vision following the transplantation of healthy rod photoreceptors in murine models of blindness. Moreover, it is now possible to generate populations of transplantable photoreceptors from embryonic stem cells. Only cells from a particular stage in development, post-mitotic photoreceptor precursors, appear capable of migrating from the subretinal space into the recipient neural retina. Why and how only these cells migrate represents an important and intriguing question.
