‘Scientific instruments’ before the rise of modern science in the 1800’s were diverse and pervasive. Instruments were used in a wide variety of activities including research and observation, navigation, surveying, drawing, education, vision improvement, and even fashion and entertainment. Dr Baker will explore these technologies and the thriving trade in them in eighteenth-century London. There, hundreds of preindustrial workshops and retail shops churned out instruments for use across Britain, Europe, and their colonies.
