Abstract
The project “The Evolution of School Mathematics Discourse” developed a framework for analysing the discourse of GCSE examination questions, founded in the theoretical assumption that mathematical activity involves engagement in mathematical forms of discourse and hence that differences in the discourse in which students are expected to engage can be interpreted as differences in their mathematical activity. Students were asked to answer questions written using forms of language found in examinations from different years. In this seminar I will present some of the results of this investigation, focusing in particular on student responses to questions with different degrees of specialisation.
