Causation as a thermodynamic phenomenon
- 👤 Speaker: David Papineau (King's College London)
- 📅 Date & Time: Wednesday 22 October 2014, 13:00 - 14:30
- 📍 Venue: Seminar Room 2, Department of History and Philosophy of Science
Abstract
This talk will argue that causation is not constituted by fundamental physical pushes, but is rather a macroscopic phenomenon akin to the increase of entropy. As well as defending this view by reference to recent probabilistic approaches to causation, the talk will explore some of its implications for physicalist reductionism in the philosophy of mind and elsewhere.
Series This talk is part of the CamPoS (Cambridge Philosophy of Science) seminar series.
