Abstract
Debates surrounding sex differences in behaviour often focus on dichotomies, such as ‘nature versus nurture’, ‘sex versus gender’ and ‘biology versus culture’. In this talk, I aim to challenge these dichotomous views of sex differences and attempt to provide an integrative, evolutionary perspective that incorporates the roles of socialisation and culture. Novel meta-analytic and experimental data will be presented on sex differences in mating strategies, sensation-seeking and conformity. I will argue that developing a more integrated perspective on sex differences in human behaviour and cognition has real-world implications, for example in enhancing our understanding of sex differences in susceptibility to mental health disorders.
