"Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic Disease: Is It All In Our Head?": Elucidating Mechanisms of Central Metabolic Control
- 👤 Speaker: Dr Stefan Trapp, UCL, Centre for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Neuroscience
- 📅 Date & Time: Thursday 04 December 2014, 16:00 - 17:00
- 📍 Venue: Hodgkin Huxley Seminar Room, Physiology Building, Downing Site
Abstract
“Work in our laboratory is concerned with the role of the brain and particularly the autonomic nervous system, in diabetes mellitus and obesity. Early experiments on rabbits by Claude Bernard almost 150 years ago have linked lesions in the dorsal vagal complex of the brainstem with diabetes. Similarly, many diabetic patients present with autonomic imbalance, and particularly a loss of vagal activity. We are using rodent models combined with pharmacogenetics, and a combination of molecular, optical, immunocytochemical and electrophysiological techniques to elucidate the role of the autonomic nervous system in metabolic control in vitro and in vivo.”
