Abstract
The search for multiferroic materials, where ferroelectricity and magnetism are coupled, has a long history. Until recently it was believed that these two orders rarely coexist and the interplay between them is weak. The breakthrough occurred with the discovery of frustrated magnets showing strong sensitivity of electric polarization and dielectric constant to applied magnetic fields. In my talk I will focus on the relationship between magnetic frustration and ferroelectricity, and discuss microscopic mechanisms inducing electric polarization in magnetically ordered states as well as phenomenological description of spectacular effects observed in frustrated magnets. I will also explore the possibility to find similar phenomena in thin ferromagnetic films, where electric polarization can be induced by domain wall patterns.
