Abstract
I will discuss some basic examples of non-linear wave equations and the phenomena exhibited by them. Emphasis will be on developing intuition, as well as introducing some of the basic techniques that are commonly employed to study them. In particular, I will present a proof of shock formation for small data solutions of a quasi-linear wave equation in spherical symmetry (a result originally due to Fritz John).
