Abstract
Is there a reason for doing mathematics? My focus is the students’ subjective reaction to mathematics and the factors that draw them away or close to it. Different stories will outline different perspectives of how a student can (dis)connect with the subject. Happy but also distressing stories because mathematics can be meaningful both in a positive and in a negative way. At least if we know how students feel maybe we can help them to change it. Especially if these feelings are connected with beliefs about mathematics which could have been otherwise.
