Abstract
An experimental study of torsionally oscillating spheres at low Reynolds number is presented. A novel experimental system was developed to control the oscillatory motion of spheres in a viscous fluid. The influence of nearby solid boundary on the motion of the sphere and the generated fluid flow is explored. The rich behaviour which results from the interaction of pairs of spheres is detailed. Finally, an array of multiple connected spheres is devised which is capable of self-propulsion at low Reynolds number.
