Abstract

In September 2011, Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron were cheered by an enthusiastic crowd in Benghazi, after Britain and France had contributed to the fall of Colonel Gaddafi’s regime. In September 2012, again in Benghazi, US Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed in a terrorist attack. In autumn 2014, Libya doesn’t make the newspapers’ headlines any more, but violent fighting is currently engulfing two factions of the former anti-Gaddafi rebels.

The Cambridge University European Society, Young European Movement Cambridge, and Cambridge University French Society cordially invite you to discuss all of this and more with two diplomatic heavyweights: Richard Northern, former British Ambassador to Libya (2010-2011), and Emmanuel Rimbert, French diplomat and author who formerly served as press attaché and political advisor in Libya (2013-2014), will be joining us for an afternoon of debate, followed by a more informal chat accompanied by nibbles and wine.

This promises to be an incredible occasion to hear about the French and British diplomatic standpoints with regard to Libya directly from two of the people who helped to shape such standpoints!
