Abstract
As part of my on-going interest in the political economy of public culture, particularly, the cinema, this paper will draw upon the research carried out for my thesis on a history of the cinema in Lahore c. 1919-1947. The first part will explore the materialisation of the amorous and the silent moving image from the last decade of the 19th century, when cinema technology erupted across the globe. The second part will discuss the coming of sound to the moving image β and the silent image in the age of βtalkieβ films.
