Abstract
The discovery of new materials with appealing functional properties is challenging and such properties are often observed in complex oxides containing transition metals in intermediate or unusual oxidation states which must be stabilised under special synthetic conditions.
High-pressure and temperature synthesis is a powerful tool for stabilizing materials with unique structures and properties(“Hard-chemistry”) and one can manipulate and tune those structures, and therefore their properties, by modifying their anion lattices with “soft” reactions. Hence, combination of “hard-soft” oxide chemistry is appealing as a synthetic route for new materials.
The success of this “hard-soft” chemistry approach in chromium perovskites along with some ternary Mn oxides (MnBO3) obtained from high pressure will be presented and discussed.
