Abstract
I show why the existing formulation of supergravity cannot accommodate T-duality, a basic symmetry of string theory. An effort to resolve this issue leads to the introduction of so-called `exotic branes’. I discuss how a similar issue arises in Double Field Theory, a reformulation of supergravity which is supposed to make T-duality manifest.
