Periodic and quasiperiodic vortex shedding in the wake of a rotating sphere

Abstract
Without rotation, the wake of a sphere is governed by a single control parameter (the Reynolds number) and the dynamic régimes that are selected at low and moderate values of RE are well known. Here we consider rotation of the sphere about an axis aligned with the outer flow. This second control parameter (Omega) does not break the axisymmetry of the setting but allows for a much richer bifurcation scenario. By investigating the relevant base flows, studying their linear stability properties and computing the corresponding fully developed régimes we attempt to systematically map out a large region of the parameter space and to relate the observed behaviour to its non-rotating counterpart.
