Abstract
The determination of the structure at ambient conditions as well as the structural changes under the influence of external parameters (T, p, B, H) is essential for the understanding of the mechanical, thermodynamic, electronic, and magnetic properties of materials. A brief formal description of the diffraction from a material will be deduced. Emphasis will be put on the experimental and technical aspects of powder and single-crystal diffraction. These insights such help to successfully conduct a diffraction experiment at a beamline without a thorough knowledge of crystallography.
