We have detected the highest redshift Carbon in the intergalactic medium, a mere 1 billion years after the big bang, at the end of an era when the first stars are thought to have formed. The presence of this Carbon is essential for determining when the products of stellar nucleosynthesis escaped from galaxies and polluted the surrounding pristine intergalactic gas. I will discuss these observations in the context of the distribution of baryonic matter in Universe.
