Abstract
In 2018 the Joint European Torus (JET) at Culham will attempt to break its own 16MW fusion power record. I will describe the physics progress that makes us optimistic about success. ITER β the international experiment being built in France β has been designed to achieve a full self sustained fusion burn. This will be the scientific demonstration that fusion is possible. Attention is switching to a harder question β making fusion a practical source of electricity. It is clear that fusion power will make huge demands on engineering performance. As a case study I will describe recent studies at Culham of fusion blankets β the primary heat exchanger and the place where tritium is bred from Lithium.
