Soil erosion in Britain – is it a problem?

2015 is the International Year of Soil. From soil comes our food, fibre, fuel and timber. Mineral soil formation is extremely slow, and any loss is best considered irreplaceable. Soils can be damaged in a number of ways, one of which is erosion. The extent, severity and impacts of erosion in Britain will be described.

Sheep creating and eroding bare soil in the 1960s and a wet winter in 1968/69 got me interested in soil erosion in both upland and lowland Britain. This interest has been maintained to the present day from my early PhD research to researching and advising government, commerce and non-governmental organisations.
