Perhaps the most influential account of dopamine in cognition attributes it a role in signalling reward prediction errors that are used for temporal difference learning (Schultz, Dayan & Montague (1997)). I will present recent computational and experimental work arguing that the resemblance between phasic dopamine responses and reward prediction errors may be largely phenomenological, and that, in any case, dopamine is likely to play a broader role in belief formation.
