An Adamless Eden: The College Girl Novel and Food Culture

Abstract
Children’s literature is full of food. We have favorite “food scenes”: All you have to do is think of a book, and there is some special treat or meal associated with it. But certain genres of children’s lit use food to different effects. In the different college girl novels and book series that became popular during the late-1800s-early 1900s in America, food was a specific kind of female community activity. Based on a larger-scale cookbook and entertainment guide project, I examine the particulars around meals and food in college girl culture as portrayed in these turn-of-the-century texts… and provide samples as well!
