Abstract
Darwin was right; it is the only game in town. That does not mean, however, that there aren’t topics that are long over-due for re-examination. Let’s call them “myths”. Not fairy-tales, but areas of received wisdom where everybody nods and says “Yes, yes; couldn’t agree more”. What about mass extinctions? Do they radically re-direct the course of evolution or in fact accelerate the inevitable? Extraterrestrials? Two a penny, so we are confidently told; if so why the Great Silence (aka Fermi’s Paradox)? As somebody once said, you really must be very careful when you step out of your door….
