Increasingly, digital models are being employed during the design, the construction and the maintenance of our built infrastructure. In this context, one major challenge is the consistent and on-demand updating of these complex models in order to efficiently and sustainably face future challenges, such as the demographic change, the increasing mobility, the global climate change, the aging infrastructure as well as the emergence of innovative information technologies. As estimated by the McKinsey Global Institute, there is a potential of $1 trillion annual savings from a viable 60 percent improvement in infrastructure productivity. Since a large part of our infrastructure environment is formed by buildings, bridges, tunnels, and road networks, their functionality and safety has to be modelled, monitored and visualized in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. In this context, the presentation will address major contributions and future challenges on how to create modelling methods to capture the life-cycle of infrastructure systems, how to create sensing methods to capture as-built infrastructure condition information, and how to create visualization methods to support decision making for sustainable infrastructure development.

Dr Koch is an Associate Professor in Building Information Modelling at the Department of Civil Engineering. He studied Civil Engineering with focus on Engineering Informatics at the Bauhaus-University Weimar, where he also received his doctorate in Civil Engineering on Distributed Building Information Modelling. Subsequently, Dr Koch worked as a Visiting Postdoc at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, before he was appointed as a Lecturer at the Ruhr-University Bochum in 2010 where he headed the Computer Vision and Mixed Reality Group at the Chair of Computing in Engineering until 2014
