Broad wavelength X-shooter observations of a unique AGN sample at z=1.55 show extremely good agreement with predicted spectra of thin accretion disks. The observations provide the first reliable black hole spin measurements for a large number of luminous AGN . They also show a clear β€œspin-up” for the most massive black holes, which indicate either unusual evolution or a previously unnoticed selection effect.

I shall combine these findings with new data on super-Eddington accretion, through slim accretion disks, in local and high redshift AGN . This has important consequences to the growth rate, and evolution, of all size black holes.
