An unexpected journey : from mathematics to patent law

We will explain how a background in mathematics is extremely valuable in the patent profession, and how rewarding (both intellectually and otherwise!) a career in patent law can be. A mathematics background enables you to work closely on cutting-edge technology in, for example, bioinformatics, audio signal processing, cryptography, digital image processing and software. We will describe our experiences of working as patent attorneys, illustrated with examples of some of the many interesting inventions where mathematics has played a vital role. We will explain the range of mathematics-based inventions we deal with in our day-to-day work, and will illustrate our talk with inventions devised by some successful local companies.
