Abstract
The large N limit of confining gauge theories is a free limit in terms of the physical degrees of freedom, glueballs and mesons. This has many powerful implications, some of which are still being uncovered. I will review the tension between two famous properties of large N confining theories, volume independence and Hagedorn spectra. In non-supersymmetric adjoint QCD , this tension is especially severe, and I will explain the accumulating evidence that it is resolved in a striking way: the theory develops an emergent fermionic symmetry in the large N limit. Trying to understand where such symmetries may come from has lead us to uncover relations between the spectra of large N confining theories and certain 2D CFTs, as well interesting spectral sum rules constraining the N=\infty vacuum energy.
