The global thermohaline circulation of the oceans is associated with a transformation of warm to cold water in the Atlantic and a reverse transformation of cold to warm water in the Southern ocean. In this talk I will discuss the role of air-sea interactions in these transformations. I will focus in particular on whether net heating and net cooling at the sea surface, in a given ocean basin, is simply a response to local ocean dynamics or is controlled by large scale atmospheric processes.
