Modelling the bioenergetics and foraging behaviours of albatrosses

Abstract
Understanding the factors affecting the population dynamics of seabirds is essential to better inform conservation strategies, but the inherent complexity of ecosystems makes the identification of the mechanisms underlying population dynamics difficult. Predicting future environmental impacts is an even greater challenge. We present a multi-faceted modelling approach to capture the linkages between physiology, behaviour, and the environment that rests on Dynamic Energy Budget theory and state dependent foraging theory. This allows us to explore how growth, maturation and reproduction depend on the acquisition and allocation of energy under different foraging strategies and environmental conditions. The models are parameterized from, and validated against, extensive data on albatrosses obtained by the British Antarctic Survey over the past decades.
