Abstract
Although fluid properties are relatively homogeneous within ocean gyres, jets may act as material transport and mixing barriers and therefore affect global ocean adjustment. The Potential Vorticity Staircase model provides insight into the dynamics of transport barriers, and some of its aspects are examined in the Southern Ocean. However, the detailed dynamics are elusive, involving both the mesoscale and sub-mesoscale. A study of the North Atlantic using satellite observations and identification of Lagrangian coherent structures sheds new light on the behaviour of the Gulf Stream and its role as a barrier or blender.
