Abstract
Jan has 40 years management experience in the NHS , 20 as an NHS CEO in a wide variety of contexts and organisations. He has been described as “one of the great NHS managers of his generation” (Editor, HSJ ); ”a serial improver of failing hospitals“ (citation for ‘hero of the NHS ’); and “a truly great manager” (commentator Roy Lilley).
Jan is also the author of “Too Good To Fail?”, shortlisted for Management Book of the Year 2014 and begun when Jan spent a year at the Judge Business School as an NHS University Fellow; and this year articles on the problems of the NHS in the BMJ , the Guardian and for the Institute of Healthcare Management. He was interviewed on ITN news earlier this month about the current NHS financial problems.
He will be talking about how serious the present situation in the NHS is, the conflicting and contradictory requirements it currently faces, the mismatch between supply and demand at the heart of the problem, what is wrong with the current NHS business model, and how to get the right one.
Jan’s talk will be of interest to doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, to managers and economists, and to anyone who cares about the future of the NHS .
