Events occurring at the solid/ aqueous interface underpin a variety of technologies used in the biomedical and technological fields. Interactions occurring at interfaces are also used to good effect in nature where biomolecules guide and control the formation of biominerals. My research group studies biomineralisation in vivo and transitions the mechanistic information so gained to laboratory-based reaction systems. A major goal of our research is to develop a detailed understanding of interactions between biomolecules such as peptides and surfaces including preformed particles in solution. Using examples from our recent studies, this presentation will describe our current understanding of the mechanisms of biological-material interactions for a number of inorganic materials.
