Abstract
Open quantum random walks are (classical) random variables that describe the movement of a particle on a graph, influenced “in a quantum way” by the internal degrees of freedom of the particle. They seem to be a natural and useful extension of Markov chains to a quantum setting. The classical theory of Markov chains contains various concepts, such as irreducibility, period, communicating classes, that can be characterized in terms of the underlying graph, and have implications regarding e.g. the convergence of the law of the chain. In this talk, we develop an analogous theory for open quantum random walks. This consists of joint work with Raffaella Carbone, from the University of Pavia.
