The role of compressibility in rotating convection

Abstract
In a rapidly rotating, low viscosity fluid, the onset of convection is often oscillatory. Most studies of oscillatory convection use either the Boussinesq or some other “sound-proof” approximation to filter out the acoustic modes. However, it has been shown that these different approximations produce drastically different results in some cases. In this talk I will use oscillatory convection as a test case to compare these different approximations, highlighting the importance of energy conservation.
