Abstract
The benefits of mentoring for students and researchers include access to advice about career development and progression and guidance about research, study and other related issues. This presentation will provide participants with tips and strategies for making the mentoring process work for both the mentor and mentee.
By the end of this presentation, you will:
- Be clearer on what you may want to get out of a mentoring relationship
- Know how to approach a potential mentor or mentee
- Know what makes an effective mentor and mentee
Topics covered:
- Your motivation for choosing and working as a mentor/mentee
- Templates and models to ensure the mentoring process works
- Guidance on how to structure a mentoring meeting
About the Speaker
Dr Sharon Saunders has held a number of academic, consultancy, training & development and HR roles in the higher education, health, police and voluntary sectors and her career story spans two continents. This means she has a wide range of academic, practitioner, consulting, teaching and facilitation experience in the areas of academic and researcher development.
Sharon is currently a Researcher Development Consultant at the University of Cambridge supporting 3000+ postdocs/research staff. She is also a coach and mentor to a number of clients undergoing leadership development training in the health and higher education sectors.  Sharon’s research around leadership and gender means that she is passionate about mentoring as a means for women to define success in whatever ways are meaningful to them.  She recently led a conference for International Womenâs Day entitled âGender Balance in the Real Worldâ.
