Abstract
The UK should, in principle, be able to generate up to 20% of its electrical energy from ocean tides and waves. However, wave-energy converter technology is still in a very early stage of development and many scientific and engineering challenges need to be overcome in order for wave energy to become commercially viable. I will introduce a selection of challenging control and estimation problems that arise in wave power generation and present some of my group’s results in this field. In particular, we will show how model predictive control and co-design can significantly increase the robustness and power generation of a wave energy converter system compared to the state of the art.
