Electron beam stabilisation for a synchrotron: An example of the control of spatio-temporal systems

Abstract
This talk will describe a range of systems whose properties vary with both location as well as time. The challenge of designing controllers for these systems will be illustrated by describing the implementation of a system for controlling the position of the electron beam for Diamond Light source, the UK’s national synchrotron facility. The resulting controller is a large scale multi-input, multi-output system which is updated at 10kHz. The importance of considering the system in terms of its spatial frequency response as well as its dynamic response will emphasised.
