Life has evolved over billions of years on our planet and has acquired the skill of adaptation to survive in a constantly changing world. The robots engineers build today work well in artificial environments, yet they are struggling to operate in unprepared surroundings. The mechanical design of a robot strongly influences the way it interacts with the environment and can substantially reduce the computational burden involved for control. In this talk I am going to show several examples which illustrate how the mechanical design can help creating intelligent behaviour in robots and how the insights can be used to approach the capabilities of living systems.
