Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the commonest cause of dementia. In the UK alone the annual cost of dementia care exceeds ÂŖ20 billion and this will grow to unsustainable levels as the prevalence of AD rises in line with the ageing population. Dr Chan will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the discovery of effective treatments for AD, early diagnosis and the perception of AD by clinicians and the general public. This will cover, in brief, work undertaken in Cambridge (and the rest of the world) on the molecular biology of disease and on the translation of cell and systems neuroscience to clinical diagnostics.

Dr Chan is an academic neurologist who leads on research into early AD for the University of Cambridge.
