Abstract
The difficulty of reproducing the galaxy luminosity function and the Tully-Fisher relation simultaneously has plagued semi-analytic models of galaxy formation since the earliest studies.
I shall show that this difficulty derives from the assumption that the disc rotation speed is proportional to the halo virial velocity. When the correct relation between disc rotation speed and halo virial velocity relation is used, the inconsistency disappears. This relation is determined by the ratio of galaxy baryonic mass to dark matter halo mass and measures how the importance of feedback varies with halo mass.
