Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the research focus of the South African Research Chair in Education and Care in Childhood.
An important aspect of the paper is the discussion on theoretical challenges where I present a critical overview of Western and Eurocentric educational and developmental theories and their value within an African context. I point out that such theories, albeit useful, may not necessarily be relevant within an African context. I advocate a bio-ecological systems theoretical approach within an African context suggesting that schools must work together with local communities as part of an ecosystem to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children.
