Abstract
How did people travel by sea after the Vikings and before the Age of Exploration? Using records from the Anglo-Norman realm, which spanned across the English Channel over the late eleventh and twelfth centuries, this paper will investigate the processes involved in medieval sailing. From stories of disasters at sea involving shipwrecks, storms, drunken sailors, and pirate attacks, it is possible to reconstruct the everyday features of travel in the medieval age of sail.
