General Artificial Intelligence: The Great Failure of Computer Science (& The Impending Success of Geology)

Abstract
Looking back at science-fiction films from even a few decades ago, it is only natural to feel disappointed; sure, everyone has a smartphone now, but where are the flying cars? The personal jetpacks & rocketships? And, perhaps most importantly – where are all the robotic butlers? This talk shall address the latter question, by considering the fundamental systemic problems in computer science, which prevent it from fully addressing the problem of general intelligence; and, moreover, the ways in which geology has actually overcome a lot of these problems during its own history. Watch out, world – for when artificial intelligence arrives onto the stage, its creator will be not a programmer, but a geologist.
